What Keeps People from Starting Online Therapy in Oklahoma?

Starting therapy can feel daunting and online therapy in Oklahoma, might have it’s own set of unique barriers. Online therapy is becoming more common, and the research keeps growing to support its effectiveness. But I often hear similar concerns from people who are feeling unsure about taking that first step.

Here are some common things that might be getting in your way from starting therapy from an online platform

“In-person therapy is better… right?”

I get this one a lot. There’s a common belief that in-person therapy is more effective. This makes perfect sense because therapy began in person in peoples own homes to be more accurate. Even in the a long time, past several year therapy mostly happened in physical offices and have completely transformed online since the pandemic. So it makes sense that people that online therapy feels foreign because it actually is fairly new.

But here’s what I know: What matters most is that you’re getting support in a way that feels possible and consistent. And for many people, that’s what online therapy in Oklahoma offers. It’s often easier to schedule, it cuts down on travel time, and you can do it from your own space which is a big deal if you’re already carrying a lot.

Since the pandemic, a lot more research has been done on online therapy and results continue to show its effectiveness. It is absolutely true that deep, meaningful work can happen over a screen. And for some people, online therapy even makes it easier to open up.

“My house is too loud or chaotic for therapy.”

Yup. Totally get it. Maybe you’ve got little ones at home, a busy family, pets running around, or you’re caregiving, you name it. You might feel like you need a perfectly quiet, serene space to do therapy and that if you don’t have it, you can’t start.

But here’s the truth: therapy is about showing up as you are, in the life you’re living now. And sometimes that means therapy happens from your car, your closet, or the back porch. We get creative. I’ve seen many clients be more open with those they live with to support them in carving out time and energy for their therapy session. Which can lend to huge dynamic shifts.

One of the things I love about online therapy in Oklahoma is that I get a glimpse into your actual world, not just what you choose to describe to me. That insight helps us work more effectively. Plus, part of the work we can do together might be finding ways to claim a little more space and peace in your environment.

“I don’t like being on camera.”

Since my passion is working with anxiety it’s not abnormal to hear people’s fears around seeing themselves on screen. Having to look at yourself on video can be super uncomfortable. Maybe you worry about how you look, how you’re sitting, or if your voice sounds weird. You are not alone!

The good news? We can adjust. You can turn off your camera if that helps. You can even cover the little self-view square on the screen with a sticky note (a favorite tip among my clients). Online therapy is about you feeling safe and supported and helping remove the mask that many feel of having to preform.

And if video still feels like too much, we can do phone sessions until you feel more comfortable. What matters most is starting where you are. Online therapy in Oklahoma doesn’t have to look a certain way. It just has to work for you.

“What if the technology fails?”

Ah yes, the glitchy internet moment. It happens! Tech isn’t perfect, and sometimes we lose a connection or deal with lag. But it’s not the end of the world. We’ll usually just hop back on, switch to phone, or reschedule if needed.

We’re not aiming for perfect, we’re aiming for progress. A little tech hiccup won’t throw us off. We’ll figure it out together.

Final Thoughts

Online therapy might not be for everyone, and that’s okay. But if it helps you show up more consistently, feel a little more grounded, or just makes therapy feel more accessible in your life, it’s absolutely worth considering.
