What is therapy?

Better understand what therapy is, how it can help and what it’s not.

The unknown is scary!  Knowing what therapy is, what it’s not and how it can help allows you understand what you might be signing up for. This can be especially useful when you are new to it but also when you are starting your healing journey out with someone new. It doesn’t need to be scary and unknown.

What therapy is:

Simply put, therapy is a meeting with a licensed professional. They assist you in taking care of your mental and emotional well-being.  Therapy can also be referred to as psychotherapy, talk therapy and counseling.

What is therapy like?

During session you will meet in a neutral space that allows you to share your experiences and express your concerns. You have a chance to take a step back from the flow of life and take a closer look at what you want, desire and need to be different.

A therapy session is about gaining a profound understanding about what’s got you and your life looking the way it does. Life has gotten the best of all of us.  Therapy allows us to take a closer look at ourselves and our lives.

What do you do in therapy:

A lot of therapy happens through talking. Therapists ask questions, get to know you and the two of you create a working relationship. In my office, I also offer tailored creative exercises such as art, mindfulness and sensory exercises to assist you in your goals. After all there are some things that we communicate better without words.

It can help by:

It helps you understand the items that might be getting in the way of who you want to be and how you want to live.  Therapy assists you in making your strengths stronger, understanding your struggles and finding ways to live a life that feels healthy for you. It can also help by:

  • Giving you a place you feel heard
  • Having a neutral space to experience your feelings and move through difficult situations
  • Assisting you in creating lasting and sustainable change
  • Understanding yourself
What therapy is not:
  • Therapy is not a magical solution. If you are hoping everything will be resolved in one 55 minute session, it won’t. Whatever you are wanting to work through did not crop up in 55 minutes so it won’t be resolved in that amount of time.
  • It is not a hired best friend either. Your therapist is there to work through your journey from afar.   They help point out things that others like friends or family cannot.  Loved ones are too close to your journey and untrained.
  • The therapy process is powerful and can be transformative if you are ready. It is about going on your journey with the support of someone who is trained to help and is invested in your goals. Now you have a brief overview of what therapy is and more knowledge on what to expect when you start your own journey.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope this helps you as you take your own powerful and transformative journey. Per usual take what fits for you, leave what does not, and join me next time. Until then let’s stay social 🙂
