The “right” way to create a visual reminder

Learn how to create a visual reminder to help you achieve your goals

Creating a visual reminder is a key step in setting your goals up for success. For most humans our sight is our main source of understanding how the world works and typically our primary source of making meaning of what is happening. Sight is a powerful tool, so naturally having a visual reminder of our goals and desires can provide a major tangible incentive.  When it’s time for you to create a visual reminder here are a few things to keep in mind to help set you up for success.

1. Picking your image

A large part of picking an image is finding something that resonates with you, not just your goals. It is helpful if this image evokes a feeling and beneficial state of mind. For example: If your goal is about meditation then you may find a picture of someone who looks  refreshed as your image. Look through several images online or in a magazine and allow yourself to gravitate towards an image that speaks to you. Maybe you even decide to create your own image.  Focus more on the way the image makes you feel then on finding the perfect representation of the goal you are trying to achieve. The image of the “Refreshed Human” may or may not be for you.

The next step is to print it out. It may seem silly but get that image in your hand. Cut it out of the magazine, print it, draw it, etc. It’s important to have something you can feel and touch because it helps make the process more real and tangible.

2. Where to place it

Finding a loving space for your image is just as important as finding the image. Making your image durable is important so that it can stay with you for a long time and continue to inspire and motivate. I typically encourage getting the image laminated or putting it in a plastic sleeve to help it survive the elements like the morning coffee or tea. Let your first place be weird and/or a highly trafficked area.

Highly trafficked areas may be the bathroom mirror, fridge or as a bookmark to the book you read before bed. 😛 HAHAHa we are all on our phones before bed these days, who’s actually reading? …Crickets. Just kidding. But seriously.

Anyway, pick a place that you look at often. It can also be helpful to make it a “weird” place that you interact with such as inside the carton of eggs you use each morning for breakfast, in the utensil drawer or in the corner of the tv screen. Pick one and commit to that spot for a week.

3. The secret ingredient: the picture rotation

This is a huge part that can help give you that last umph towards reaching the goal you’ve set for yourself. Once something sits in one place for a while we tend to get used to it. We don’t notice its presence anymore. It becomes more familiar and starts to stand out less and less with each passing moment. Don’t worry there isn’t anything wrong with you, it is normal to become accustomed to things.

In order to keep moving forward and propelling you towards the goal you’ve set through this picture you need to move it. So once a week, yes go ahead and put it on your calendar…right now. Set a reminder for your weekly picture rotation. You are going to move that picture to a new location once every week. If it was on the fridge now it’s on the bathroom mirror or on your lamp by your night stand. That’s right, find that picture a new home every week.

This encourages you to actively interact with your picture and therefore your goal. This makes it more likely that you will think about your goal and consider where you are at in achieving it.

These are three main keys that can help you create a tangible visual incentive for your goals. These strategies aren’t bulletproof but they can provide you with a good basis for creating and implementing a positive visual strategy for the things you want to achieve in the next month or years to come.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope this helps you as you take your own powerful and transformative journey. Per usual take what fits for you, leave what does not, and join me next time. Until then let’s stay social 🙂
