The skeptic: Is counseling in Edmond “Woowoo”?

I know you’ve thought about counseling in Edmond. You’ve heard other people’s stories about their experience. Some of them have been good, others not so much. You wonder if therapy could help you but as you think that there is a part of you that responds with:

“I don’t know about that!”

“It sounds kind of Woowoo.”

“It probably wouldn’t even work for us so, why bother.”

“Things about the brain are just weird, counseling can’t help with that.”

I like to call this part the skeptic. Even as you read this the skeptic part may trying to pull you away with worries that this blog is here to convince you that the skeptic doesn’t need to exist. I get that! This blog is here to give you some information about the skeptic and hopefully help you get to know this part of yourself that has been protecting you for a long time!

Counseling in Edmond and the Skeptic’s concerns

Taking a step towards change of any kind often cues the skeptic to step and tell you it’s opinions. Change means doing things differently and the skeptic often likes for things to remain the same and make logical sense. To be fair the skeptic makes great points at times like when it tells you to put in your same order at your favorite food spot because when we know that tastes good why risk trying something new? Or when it reminds you to bring a jacket anyway because you know it gets cold no matter what the weather channel says?

Counseling in Edmond is Woowoo

Not what you expected me to say, I get that. The truth is that there is a lot about the world that we don’t understand and don’t make sense the same is true about therapy. Sure there is plenty of research to back up certain therapy approaches, etc. However in the end there are still parts that are unexplained and that don’t make logical sense.  I find that not having the pressure of trying to understand every bit of it all is freeing especially in a world that praises reasoning.

I find that people often call this unexplained part of therapy “WooWoo”. This is where the skeptic comes in. It doesn’t like things it cannot explain or understand and it can sometimes discredit those things because of that. It will label the things that it doesn’t understand as bad, stupid, silly, etc.  The skeptic does this to protect you! I’m sure if you take a moment to think back you can identify ways that the skeptic part has kept you safe from taking on too much risk and sometimes any risk at all.

Listening to the Skeptic about Counseling in Edmond

The skeptic has a place and one of it’s biggest fears is often that you will take a risk that you makes things worse and it will have to work even harder to keep you safe. You might have even been in past situations when you did take risks and now the skeptic part is even louder because those risks didn’t provide the reward you’ve hoped for. I’m not here to tell you how to transform the skeptic part of you but instead to encourage you to listen. The skeptic is trying to protect you even if it is protecting you from reaching out for counseling in Edmond. I hope you listen attentively!

I hope this gives you just a little bit more insight into how the skeptic can protect us but also sometimes dictate our transformation.  If you’re ready to lean into the “woowoo” and non-woowoo of therapy.
