First of all, What is Brainspotting in Individual Counseling OKC?
Brainspotting is a mind-body therapy developed by David Grand. This type of therapy helps you position your eyes on a “brainspot” to allow your body to access unresolved emotions & experiences as a way of healing. The theory behind brainspotting is that this relevant eye position is directly connected to the base of the brain where our survival responses are “stored”. By having access to this survival part of the brain you are able to heal and process events and experiences that have kept you stuck.
Traditional talk therapy is also a useful tool that we use to help you further digest and make sense of your brainspotting sessions. However, when you are in talk therapy you are using your prefrontal cortex. This is the part of your brain that carries logic and reasoning. The prefrontal cortex is a key player in our day to day lives however it is also often the “culprit” behind protecting us from the unresolved experiences and emotions that live in the survival or base part of the brain.
In our sessions together, we use both brainspotting and talk therapy as a way of helping you get the most access towards healing.

What makes Brainspotting good for Anxiety & Panic?
Brainspotting can be a great tool for those struggling with anxiety and panic. These two emotional terrors often feel illogical when you are experiencing them. Many people try to talk themselves out of these feelings but with poor results. If you’re here then you likely know what I’m talking about. Anxiety and panic often just go around doing whatever they want and you are left to manage and pick up the pieces left behind.
Given that these two responses often feel illogical means that they are not part of the pre-frontal cortex we talked about earlier. There isn’t really a level of reasoning with them that allows them to settle down long term. That’s because they are part of your nervous system’s stress response cycle. And you guessed it, this cycle is located in the base of the brain where the “fight or flight” response live or “survival brain”. I’ve heard others talk about it as their auto pilot kicking in.
This is what makes brainspotting a brilliant choice because that is the area we are targeting when we meet. We “go to” that base part of the brain that allows your body to make the connections its needs to find healing and most importantly regulation.
What are People saying about Brainspotting for Anxiety & Panic?
Everyone’s experience with brainspotting is different but here are a few things that shoe who have done brainspotting have noticed. During a brainspotting session people might yawn, feel sleepy, notice different sensations on left vs. right side of the body, burp, nausea, etc. After a session people have reported more vivid dreams, feeling tired, feeling energized, greater clarity in their thoughts, etc.
