You are not a stranger to the feelings of panic and anxiety. It’s likely that you could even tell me when the last “attack” happened. These are both difficult and often time debilitating issues that keep you from getting to delight in your life. Let’s explore 3 truths that are a part of panic and anxiety that we tackle while in counseling in OKC.
1. Trying to Keep Anxiety and Panic From Happening is Pointless
Trying to keep anxiety and panic from occurring is normal. We often want to keep ourselves from experiencing discomfort. And I think we can all agree that anxiety is often uncomfortable. People often keep from feeling anxiety by keeping themselves busy. They will distract themselves with this or that. Sometime even creating issues just so they have something else to focus on. Unfortunately, even if one could continuously distract themselves this behavior doesn’t work long-term. In the end, distractions only serve to affirm that you can’t handle anxiety or panic.

2. By Distracting From Anxiety and Panic You Keep From Healing
Don’t get me wrong distractions can at times be helpful. However, distractions are only helpful if they are a short-term solutions. When you continue to distract instead of making space for anxiety and panic things often go awry. In order to truly heal you need to be able to trust yourself to manage anxiety and panic. You also need to know that you are going to survive these two emotions without it bringing about the end of the world. I have yet to hear of anyone dying from a panic attack.
3. Feeling Overwhelmed & Panicked after Weeks of Being “Free” Doesn’t Mean You Aren’t Making Progress
Experiencing anxiety and a panic attack is uncomfortable to say the least. It is be especially disheartening to experience these two emotions after weeks of being “free” of them. Often times people feel like they have regressed or maybe they hadn’t made as much progress as they thought they had. I’m here to tell you that progress has still occurred even if you’ve had another “attack”. There is an illusion that by working on these two uncomfortable feelings you will never experience them again. However, I would challenge you to reconsider what your goal is.
