Learn more about today’s books on anxiety

The two books about anxiety are Just Peachy by Holly Chislom and Good Anxiety: Understanding the greatest misunderstood emotion by Dr. Wendy Suzuki and Billie Fitzpatrick. If you love doodles then Just Peachy is the book for you. It addresses moods and life in a playful way that allows you to be sad and also have a laugh or two. If you are looking for a deep dive into anxiety filled with research, practical examples and coping skills then Good Anxiety… is the anxiety book for you.

Just Peachy by Holly Chislom

What I love about this anxiety book

What stands out to be the most about this book is the vulnerability that Holly takes in sharing her story. Vulnerability is a powerful mover and shaker and it was a delight to read this book. There were parts that, when you let them sink in, are sad and full of hurt but also manage to provide comic relief to common human struggles. I am a big proponent of play and I love that Holly was able to find some play with her story while also healing some of that story. I have no doubt that her vulnerability will allow others to relate and feel more normal as we can all find something to relate to.

Things to keep in mind as you read this book about anxiety

This book is filled with pictures and there is a level of depth as well as light heartedness in this read. If you are not one that is ready to laugh or see some quick truths about depression and anxiety, then this may not be the best fit for you.

A favorite quote from this anxiety book

“We are all born with fear…”

Good Anxiety: Understanding the greatest misunderstood emotion by Dr. Wendy Suzuki and Billie Fitzpatrick

What I love about this anxiety book

This book had me excited. I looked at the title and I knew. As a therapist that has dedicated years to working with anxiety, I often see books that paint anxiety as a bad and horrible emotion. It was beyond refreshing to see a book that talks about anxiety in a more complex way. Dr. Suzuki and Billie Fitzpatrick deem it the “misunderstood emotion” and anxiety is just that.

So, what I love about this read is the perspective and voice that anxiety is given that makes anxiety a normal part of life, an emotion to get curious about and embrace instead of only vilifying it.

Things to keep in mind as you read Good Anxiety

This book has several strategies in it and quizzes to take which are lovely and help with deepening your understanding; however, could also increase overwhelm with so many new things to try and learn. The material is dense and it is not abnormal to dive too deep, so try pacing yourself instead.

A favorite quote

“We can…learn how to manage the stressors of our environment more effectively so that anxiety is not in charge of us, but that we become in charge of anxiety.”

I hope this post gives you new reading ideas or reminds you of books to revisit.
